Werner Strik studied medicine at the University of Florence and completed his post graduate education at the University Hospitals of Psychiatry in Florence (Italy) and Würzburg (Germany), and at the University Hospital of Neurology of Florence. From 1991 to 1993 he was post doc researcher at the Neurological University Hospital in Zürich. From 1993 to 1998 he was Vice Director and Head of the Department of Clinical Neurophysiology at the University Hospital of Psychiatry in Würzburg. At the University of Würzburg he also received his habilitation. In October 1998 Werner Strik was appointed Full Professor and Director of the University Hospital of Psychiatry in Bern. He was president of the section psychophysiology of the world psychiatric association, president of the Swiss Society for Biological psychiatry and member of the executive board of the Swiss Society of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. Since 2003 he is Editor in Chief of the international Journal NEUROPSYCHOBIOLOGY. His research focus is Systems Neuroscience of Psychosis (SyNoPsis), a novel translational approach to schizophrenia and related disorders based on a neurobiologically informed, fundamentally revised psychopathology and its relationships with higher order cortico-cortical and cortico-basal circuits.
